Assessments of Air Bag Performance Based on the 5th Percentile Female Hybrid Iii Crash Test Dummy
نویسنده
چکیده
Historically, assessments of frontal crash safety have been based primarily on the measured responses of 50th percentile male dummies in relatively high speed vehicle crashes against a rigid flat barrier. Under such test conditions, the ability of supplementary airbag systems to greatly reduce head injury potential is clearly evident in crash tests performed by Transport Canada and others. However, significant segments of the driving population travel routinely with their seats positioned ahead of the nominal mid-position used in .50th percentile male dummy tests. Moreover, most frontal impacts can be expected to produce softer vehicle deceleration signatures than those produced in flat rigid wall tests. The necessity of broadening the range of regulated crash conditions to which vehicles fitted with airbag systems are subjected is highlighted in crash tests performed by Transport Canada using 51h percentile female Hybrid III tests, with seats placed in their most forward positions. The neck loads observed in these tests far exceeded commonly referenced injury assessment values. The magnitudes of the neck loads were influenced not only by the aggressiveness of the airbag system, but also by the timing of the deployment of the airbag. The neck loads observed in low speed offset frontal crash tests often exceeded those observed in high-speed, rigid-wall tests, as a result of the timing of airbag deployment.

متن کاملDevelopment of Advanced HIII Abaqus dummies
Abstract: Hybrid III dummies are among the most frequently used dummies in both industry and academia for vehicle crash safety. Abaqus is one of most widely applied finite element codes in the world. To meet the needs of crash safety analysis and to exploit the potential of the Abaqus/Explicit code, a family of HIII dummies, including HII 50th male, 5th female and 95th male dummies, were develo...
متن کاملDriver Lower Extremity Response to Out of Position Knee Airbag Deployment
Lower extremity injuries are the most common injuries for occupants in frontal crashes and account for 45% of all AIS 2+ injuries. Although knee airbags (KAB) have been shown to reduce knee, thigh and hip injuries, their effectiveness as a countermeasure for tibia, foot and ankle injuries remains unclear. A review of 29 frontal crash cases from the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (...
متن کاملThe Interaction of Air Bags with Upper Extremity Test Devices
This study examines and compares the response of two upper extremity test devices under driver-side air bag deployment to contribute to the development of dummy surrogates for the investigation of primary contact forearm injuries during air bag deployments. The first of these test devices, the SAE 5’ Percentile Female Arm (SAE Arm), is an anthropomorphic representation of a small female forearm...
متن کاملHybrid Iii Dummy Neck Response to Air Bag Loading
This paper discusses issues related to the Hybrid III dummy head/neck response due to deploying air bags. The primary issue is the occurrence of large moment at the occypital condyles of the dummy, when the head-rotation with respect to the torso is relatively small. The improbability of such an occurrence in humans is discussed in detail based on the available biomechanical data. A secondary i...
